President signs law to refine the Uzbek alphabet
Official documents will not be reissued immediately

The President has signed a law amending the Uzbek alphabet based on the Latin script. On 21 October, this was announced by the Head of the Presidential Administration, Saida Mirziyoyeva, on the commemorative date of granting the Uzbek language the status of the state language.
Documents will not be reissued immediately: current documents, the national currency, and securities will remain valid. Textbooks, signs, and indicators will be updated gradually—after the end of their service life, which will help reduce costs.
Mirziyoyeva clarified that she had proposed refining the alphabet as early as 11 December 2023 at a conference on the Jadid heritage. She also acknowledged that the changes could provoke objections and concerns.
