Formula 1 to return to Africa for the first time since 1993
Starting in the 2030s, Rwanda will host the African Grand Prix—the first in three decades, Formula 1 reports.

Formula 1 has signed a 10-year agreement with Rwanda to host the African Grand Prix. Races are planned to begin in the early 2030s. This will mark the championship's return to the continent for the first time since 1993, when the last African stage took place in South Africa.
A new circuit meeting FIA Grade 1 standards will be constructed in the Bugesera district, approximately 40 km from the capital, Kigali, near the new international airport. In addition to races, the complex will be capable of hosting major events, conferences, and entertainment activities year-round.
Rwanda is actively developing its international events sector: the country has already hosted the Road World Cycling Championships, Basketball Africa League matches, and a FIFA Congress.
Stefano Domenicali, President and CEO of Formula 1, described the agreement as a historic moment for the championship. Rwandan President Paul Kagame emphasized that the project aims to foster long-term economic development, create jobs, attract investments, and boost tourism.
