arXiv limits number of scientific articles to two per author per month
The new rule took effect on October 1, 2026, to reduce the burden on moderators due to the rise in low-quality publications, the arXiv blog reports.

Starting October 1, each author may submit no more than two articles per month to the arXiv repository. Additionally, a user may not have more than three active publications at the same time. Articles rejected by moderators are also counted toward the limit.
The reason for the changes is a sharp increase in the number of articles. In September 2026, arXiv received 40,363 publications, twice as many as in 2024. As a result, the number of appeals to moderators has increased: nearly 9,000 were registered last month. The primary reason for the growth is the use of neural networks by authors to prepare articles.
Moderators note an increase in 'salami publications,' where a single study is split into several smaller articles, as well as works with low scientific value. The new restrictions are temporary until arXiv develops rules for operating under conditions of mass artificial intelligence use.
