The laureates of the prize are American scientist Karl Deisseroth and German researchers Peter Hegemann and Georg Nagel. Their discovery—optogenetics—allows the activation or deactivation of nerve cell activity using light.
This method helps study brain function, the formation of memory, emotions, and behavior. In the future, it may be used to restore vision and treat neurological and psychiatric diseases.
