Her work helped land the first humans on the Moon in 1969.
Hamilton developed a priority-based task scheduling system for the onboard computer. This prevented a failure during the Apollo 11 lunar module landing when the system became overloaded with data. Thanks to her solutions, the computer continued to perform critical operations, and the mission was successfully completed.
She also proposed protection against accidental errors after her 4-year-old daughter launched the wrong program during testing. The idea was initially rejected but was later implemented following a similar incident during the Apollo 8 flight.
