Earlier, the Pentagon had demanded that the company remove protective restrictions to expand access to AI, but Anthropic refused, fearing the use of the technologies for mass surveillance and autonomous weapons.
The Claude model had been used by the Pentagon since 2024 for analyzing intelligence data, satellite imagery, and drone footage. It was integrated into the Maven Smart System, which helps identify military targets. Experts note that abandoning such technologies could be a complex and lengthy process.
Instead of Anthropic, the Pentagon is expanding cooperation with other AI developers, including Google, xAI, and OpenAI. The latter is already being used more actively in U.S. military structures.
